PEvaluation for FMP

  1. Did you meet your stated aims?

I would say overall I did meet my stated aims ,it did not go as smoothly as expected as I decided to shorten it and make the shots more light as some of the shots were dim,but I did reach the aims and goals for this product I think/hope.

2.How does your work compare with your chosen practitioner?

I would say my work compares with my chosen practitioner as it has a narrative, and it also has a dark kind of tone to it. The only thing is I don’t think it is as visually pleasing as my practitioners as the whole light situation didn’t work for me.For example the lights in my video are dim to create atmosphere just like how Stephen Garett uses dark kind of tones:

My practitioner:

My video:

Obviously the quality of my practitioners are better as they have more time/a bigger budget.

3·       Did you make any changes? Why? How did your concept develop?

I would say I did make changes throughout as the light situation did not really work out so I didn’t use the lights, also the editing I did not plan what edits I was going to use so i used more effects. I think without the effects the footage would be boring, so the editing changed and also the music last minute I changed the music as I was going to have more music in it but I chose not too. My concept developed as the story started off as just a tiny script and I was just planning on doing an opening scene but the footage was too long and gave away too much of the plot,so I had to re-film to make it into more of a trailer. I also re-filmed as the shits were dim so I made sure I filmed in more daylight but I had enough time to re-film which was the good thing.

The lights in my rough edit:

compared to the final product:

4. Does the finished product appeal to the target audience?

I would say my product does appeal to my target audience because from my survey I concluded that my target audience prefers to have a lot of tension and a cliff hanger in a opening scene /trailer and I feel like my video achieved this. Especially at he end when he walks with the sword  I feel like this builds tensions as hopefully the audience want to know what is coming next. I also said that the music will appeal to the target audience as it creates atmosphere so I think this appealed to my target audience. I also found that my target audience was 18-30 years old so I feel like my video appeals to the age range as 18-30 year olds might understand the concept of the story a bit more.

When I showed my final edit to a audience the feedback I got was positive and I was told it was good but maybe it could have been longer. I was also told by a family member that they prefer my rough edit. But overall most people said they prefer the final product to the rough. I was also told that they wanted to know what happens next which was what my whole objective so that was good.

5.  How well does the product reflect your skills and the things you have learnt this year?

I feel like the product reflects my skills because I have improved with being more organised and timing things right. I also think I have improved with the editing as i used a reverse and slow effect. I uthink it reflects that I’ve learnt more with making the film look better in the editing process as the footage I had was quite boring before I started editing. I have also never made a short film/trailer/opening scene so this shows I have learn’t how to do this. I have also learnt more about sound and short films as my focus was mainly music videos but for this product I went out of my comfort zone.

6.  Is it an accurate reflection of your skills? Are you proud of it?

I think it is a reflection of my skills I guess I am proud of it,but the only thing is I was not as happy with it as I thought as I am quite a visual person and I tend to visualise my ideas in my head so the vision in my head was a bit better. But all in all I did work hard on it so I am proud of it. The other thing I wasn’t that pleased about was the quality as the lights were quite dim and my camera hasn’t got the best resolution as you can see the quality/lights aren’t too great throughout. Some of the shots did not  flow as much as they weren’t really smooth and I didn’t really use the best camera angles as I feel the camera angles weren’t that exciting.

·       7.What would you do differently next time? What did you learn?

Next time I would include more exciting camera angles and make the clip a bit more exciting and longer. I learn’t that in future I need to make it flow a bit. I have learn’t more about making it flow. Also I learn’t all about how to use music and editing to create effect as I didn’t plan on the editing I would do.I have also learn’t about lighting more and the effects it has. I quite like this camera angle:

8. What would you do differently if you had a larger/unlimited budget?

Essentially if I had a larger budget I would have a more actors, locations and I would definitely make it longer and focus on styling the outfits more. I would also do more with the lights and make it more aesthetically pleasing. I would also have more props a devil costume for example. I would also have more technical equipment and I would film somewhere else like a big house for example and it would have more actors in it and tell more of a story.

Evaluation for research

My research helped shape my ideas as it made me think more about the concepts and my ideas. It also helped me with the target audience and the technical side of things as I researched more about lightning and music in film,I enjoyed doing the practitioner research as I always have a lot of practitioners especially for music videos. I enjoyed analysing each music video as well as I feel music videos are visually strong so thats why I analysed music videos. My best sources were probably my primary research as I learnt specially what my target audience want to see.I also found the concepts and ideas research useful as I got to research in more depth my ideas and any technical difficulties for example lighting. With a bigger budget and more time I would have defiantly expanded on my survey for target audience as I would’ve done a lot more questions and asked a lot more different people so I could get a very detailed audience profile. I would have also done more primary research and I would have done more tests shots if the budget and time was bigger as I would of got big better lights and had more time to film and try different edits.

Research on practitioner :

As mentioned above I enjoyed doing this research as I found inspiration from each practitioner especially when it came to lightning and visuals. I had a lot of practitioners in mind for my research but i chose four as I did not have the time to research any more.

Research on competition:

In this part of research I researched the beginning  scene of a film called house of the devil,I chose this as it has a similar theme/genre of my project. This helped as I saw how the opening scene is shown and it helped me think about the credit as well.

Research legal/ethical issues:

This research helped as I learnt what is allowed in horror films for example violence and I also learnt the act of discrimination rule and about age limits etc.

Research on technical requirements :

My test shots were very useful as I learnt about the lighting I plan on using so this helped as I saw that the lighting does not show up on the camera as well as it does on the eye, so I learnt that I need a light in the background so the light can reflect off something.

Research on concepts/ideas:

For this part of research I learnt more about the ,how I want to represent the devil. I learnt much more about this so this helped shape the idea of the devils character in my mind. This helped as I got to research in depth all my ideas which helped create a more clear vision.

Research on costs/budgets :

This part of research was not very useful to me as I could not actually find much relevant information regarding my project.

Research on target audience:

This part did help me a lot as I personally got to collect the results which helped me shape more of a clear idea about what my target audience want to see and how long my project should be so I can estimate how long it should be. It also helped me as I learnt what people want to see in an opening sequence.
